I'm exhausted by all the talk about Miley Cyrus' performance on the VMA's last Sunday. I don't have the video posted here. I really didn't feel like taking the 30 seconds to do it. I assume you've already seen it because you have a television and/or the internet. Just in case, here's a quick sum-up: during Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" Miley Cyrus came out dressed like the above picture and started Twerking.
According to Urban Dictionary, Twerking is:
Also known as dirty dancing. When a woman slams her bottom on a mans pelvic area while dancing. The man can also lunge his pelvic area forward for a harder bang. This usually performed in a dance club along with upbeat music.
A few weeks/months/whatever ago Miley Cyrus posted a video of her Twerking online. It got a lot of attention and it kind of became "a thing" for her. I'm pretty sure MTV knows about this and asked her to do it on stage; the people who gave this a lot of attention online are the people who watch MTV. And for the producers, Hannah Montana twerking with the most popular artist of the Summer is a good "get." There was no way this wasn't going to get a lot of play. This performance was not for the people who watch MTV once a year just to see this award show, or for the people who didn't even watch it live and knowingly clicked on a link in an email from a friend titled, "Miley Cyrus whoring in it up!!" or something like that. Yet, those are the people outraged.
I kind of feel like I'm getting a taste of social history looking back at what happened after Elvis shook his hips on Milton Berle's show. His performance was referred to by people in the media at the time as movements meant for strippers and whores.
I've also heard people say they feel bad for Miley Cyrus. Uh, the chick is rich beyond all comprehension for the majority of humankind. She doesn't have to do a god damn thing she doesn't want to. She probably did this because she thought it would be fun. And it does look like she was having a great time...
One more thing: this was on MTV, the channel that aired Jack Ass, Jersey Shore, and Teen Mom. But people are all inflamed that a 20-something girl in a bikini gyrated around on their stage? Ha.
